sleep apnea and snoring are treatable

SLEEP APNEA: WHY DETERMINE IF YOU OR A LOVED ONE HAS IT?

Sleep Apnea is associated with heart attacks, heart failure, strokes, high blood pressure, high speed motor vehicle crashes, job loss, marital and family problems and a host of other complications. Diagnosis is vital, and effective treatment is available.

SNORING: ISN'T IT A HARMLESS NUISANCE?

No! Snoring that is loud enough to drive others out of the bedroom usually indicates the presence of a serious medical problem such as sleep apnea.

ISN'T REGULAR SNORING WITHOUT CESSATION OF BREATHING OK?

No! It may be a sign of UPPER AIRWAY RESISTANCE SYNDROME, a variant of SLEEP APNEA. Patients with upper airway resistance syndrome may never actually stop breathing as occurs hundreds of times a night in sleep apnea, but they must fight for every breath--struggling to move air through a narrowed airway. Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome is associated with high blood pressure and sleepiness at the wheel that is as dangerous as that resulting from Sleep Apnea. Also, as the patient becomes progressively exhausted from fighting to breathe every night, upper airway resistance syndrome may decompensate into frank sleep apnea. The tremendous swings in pressure within the chest during violent efforts to overcome upper airway resistance have even been found to cause collapse of the left ventricle (pumping chamber) of the heart!

SLEEP APNEA: WHAT SYMPTOMS CAN IT CAUSE?

All or none of the following may be noted with sleep apnea (although some patients with severe sleep apnea have no symptoms at all!):

-Sleepiness, sleep attacks.
-Driving on 'auto-pilot' with no recall of the trip.
-Memory loss and episodes of confusion.
-Declining job or school performance.
-Depression, irritability and mood swings.
-Dry or sore throat on awakening.
-Swelling of the uvula (the finger like appendage that hangs from the soft palate.
-Morning headaches.
-Restless sleep; bed torn up.
-Night sweats.
-Impotence.
-Snoring or gasping in sleep.
-Awakenings with chest pain, shortness of breath, choking, palpitations or panic.
-Awakening with no symptoms at all.

IF I HAD SLEEP APNEA AND STOPPED BREATHING, WOULDN'T IT WAKE ME UP?

No! Many people with sleep apnea who stop breathing hundreds of times per night never awaken from their apneas and feel that nothing wrong happens while they sleep. Thus, many patients with sleep apnea deny that they have a problem and resist or delay medical care for their potentially dangerous sleep apnea condition.

SLEEP APNEA: WHAT ARE ASSOCIATED FINDINGS?

Any or none of the following may be noted in people with sleep apnea:

-Obesity; short, thick neck.
-Nasal congestion; deviated nasal septum; 'sinus trouble'.
-Broad face; small jaw; 'overbite'.
-Long soft palate; large tongue.
-Enlarged tonsils and adenoids (primarily in children with sleep apnea).
-High blood pressure.
-History of heart trouble or stroke.

SLEEP APNEA AND UPPER AIRWAY RESISTANCE SYNDROME:
IF YOU OR A LOVED ONE MAY HAVE IT, WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

Avoid alcohol! and discuss any sedating medications with your doctor.

Seek evaluation and treatment without delay!--from a quality sleep center with a track record of achieving successful long-term results for its patients. Postponing assessment proves disastrous in some cases, since the afflicted person in effect is playing roulette with his or her health every night, and in many cases, endangering self and others when behind the wheel of a car.
